A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun and another part of the sentence. It often tells you where, when, or how something happens.
Examples:
- in the room
- on the table
- after lunch
- with a smile
In “The book is on the table”, “on” is the preposition. It shows the relationship between the book and the table.
Common prepositions include: in, on, at, by, with, under, over, through, to, from, about, for, after, before
Admittedly, and embarrassingly, I never really knew what prepositions were until now. I always dozed off in English class, and could get by without really learning anything, nor did I care about writing at all when I was growing up. Only now in my adulthood do am I realizing that being able to write beautifully is a useful and important skill.
