Sentence Components
Subject - The noun or pronoun doing the action
Predicate - The part of the sentence that contains the verb and tells what the subject does.
Object - The noun or pronoun receiving the action.
clause - A group of words with a subject and verb
phrase - A group of words without both a subject and a verb. “under the bed, after the movie”
modifier- A word or phrase that describes or changes another word: “The very tall man.”
Verb Forms and Sentence Structure
Tense: Shows the time of the action Voice: Active or passive
- active: the cat chased the mouse.
- passive: the mouse was chased by the cat. Mood: The form of the verb that shows the speaker’s attitude:
- indicative: statements/questions like, “She runs.”
- imperative: For commands (Run! Jump!)
- subjunctive: For wishes or hypotheticals (If I were taller…)
